At Monett Intermediate, students are heavily involved in using proficiency scales, and student goal settings. The videos below show a student sharing her understanding of student charting and goal setting, as well as proficiency scales. Monett uses proficiency scales to establish and communicate clear expectations for learning targets.
In the first clip, she explains the general proficiency scale, from 0-3 on a 4 point scale. In the second clip, watch an explanation of how formative assessment results are used by students to know what they need to work on.
Carrollton Elementary kindergartners use this chart to assess their own writing. Students understand both their current level of writing, and what the next level looks like, so they can apply next steps in their journey as writers. Who wouldn't want more scoops of ice cream? Each quarter during the school year, teachers adjust the four levels, increasing the expectations for student writing.
