Cold Water Elementary School has been functioning as a true professional learning community for the past four years. Prior to 2009, grade-level teams met randomly to plan lessons but did not utilize data. In 2009, we created a schedule that gave grade-level PLC teams a 55-minute common planning time. PLC teams began to meet every Wednesday with the principal and instructional specialist. After analyzing our MAP data, essential learning outcomes were identified and became our quarterly SMART goals.
Now we analyze our MAP data every year and adjust our essential outcomes based on the data. Each team creates common formative pre-assessments which are used to assess each student’s level regarding each specific skill. Teams collaboratively determine proficiency levels for the skill. Results from the pre-assessments determine which students are proficient, close to proficient and far from proficient. This data helps teachers select appropriate strategies to use. Teachers constantly assess the students throughout the quarter and modify their instruction. Additionally, students who are not proficient are invited to an after-school tutoring group to focus on that specific skill.
PLC norms are reviewed annually and used consistently by all PLC teams. Teams use the Professional Learning Community Continuum twice each year to assess their implementation of the PLC practices. Over the past four years, Cold Water has grown from a staff that once worked in isolation to one that now works ollaboratively and focuses on the success of every child.
We continuously monitor the effectiveness of our PLC and have made substantial progress, but we realize there is still much work to be done. While celebrating the overall positive trend in math and communication arts we have seenfor the past four years, we continue to strive for proficiency in 100 percent of our students.
