The Freedom PLC Story (Prezi)
Freedom Elementary School has been on the PLC journey for eight years. Throughout those years, great gains have been seen in both instructional practices and student achievement. Our Freedom family is focused on success. We are committed to quality learning and teaching, and this commitment helps us take care of kids. Freedom has a collaborative culture in which we have implemented the School-Within-A-School philosophy. This approach allows us to work vertically together. Our focus is on results and student success.
Our fourteen-member leadership team includes representatives from third, fourth and fifth grades, special education, special areas and administration. Team members are integrated at all levels throughout the building. Both of our principals are participating members of our weekly leadership team meetings which has helped to establish open communication and trust both up and down the leadership chain. Trust must start at the top and does in our Freedom family!
Freedom Elementary has a clear vision of what students need to know and do. Curriculum teams developed Priority Standards based on the Common Core Standards and adopted a standards-based grading system which reflects these Priority Standards. An integral part of Priority Standard’s success is following the Assessment for Learning model in which most of our staff have been formally trained. Students have a clear picture of where they need to be and are actively involved in the goal-setting process.
All three tiers of RtI are implemented at Freedom Elementary and all staff are involved. Teachers participate in building-wide data days every six weeks. Students participate in an intervention of some sort designed to meet their individual needs, whether it be remedial, enrichment or something in between. All of the PLC concepts and best practices help us keep our vision a top priority – “Preparing EACH student for success.”
