Logan-Rogersville Primary, Logan-Rogersville R-VIII

In 2014, Logan-Rogersville Primary was first recognized as an Exemplary PLC School, and in 2017 Logan-Rogersville Primary became our first Sustaining Exemplary PLC School. While some things change over time, (their data wall is now digital), the focus on high expectations for students, focused data team meetings, and a culture that celebrates all remain.

In January 2010, through the PLC process, we collectively wrote a mission and vision statement for our school, as well as examined our values and commitments. It was powerful for our staff to recognize and list their values. We found that most staff were willing to do whatever it takes to help ensure that all students make progress. SMART goals were written for every grade level. Teachers looked at their current reality to determine specific measures. On the target date, goals were closely analyzed to see if they were being met. These goals helped teachers to focus and notice every child that was not making progress.

Also at that time, our district scheduled early-release time on Friday afternoons so that we could meet regularly and fully implement the work of a PLC. We created a leadership team to provide direction and embrace shared leadership. A strong teacher leader was chosen to represent each grade level, as well as three others (counselor, SLP and physical education teacher). This way, at least two leadership team members would always be involved in the weekly grade-level discussions. This helped bring clarity to the work we were trying to accomplish.

Moving forward as a PLC school, we will continue to collect, analyze and monitor data for increased student achievement. We have already determined through our data that we need to improve our rigor for kindergarten reading, so our SMART goal will change in that area this year. Our leadership team will continue to set school goals and monitor the fidelity of implementation. When new teachers join us, we will introduce them to our process and build the same level of trust and collaboration that has become commonplace in our building.

When we began our PLC training, we made a commitment to “become” a PLC school…not just “do” PLC. We are proud to say we have met that commitment! Our school is forever changed because of our PLC implementation and the processes we have put into place.
