Timber Creek Elementary, Raymore-Peculiar R-II

Timber Creek is one of six elementary schools within the Raymore-Peculiar School District serving students from kindergarten to fourth grade. Jaguar is our name, learning is our game.
Timber Creek Elementary began a culture shift two years ago while working with our PLC state representative. Through trainings, we were challenged to look at the culture of our building as a whole. We implemented several PLC activities to help change the culture of our building. Our big change moment happened when our staff took the PLC Culture Survey. We spent time reflecting as a staff on the results, which led to constructive conversations and development of a plan. As a building, we made a joint effort to change our culture in a positive way. Because of this shift we are able to collaborate openly regarding student data, effective instructional strategies, student behavior needs, and vertical progressions.
Some other activities that were effective for our building were setting norms, establishing roles, using common forms for collaboration, setting regular meeting dates, and creating specific agendas. We worked collaboratively on building initiatives such as positive student reinforcement, building a positive culture, growth mindset, brain based learning, effective data evaluation, protocols for data cycle collaboration, and vertical teaming within our building. Through PLC and building collaboration we evaluated current instructional strategies to determine if they were best practice. Therefore, we learned how to identify misconceptions in order to determine instructional strategies needed for student growth.
Our Timber Creek building culture is now “what is best for our kids”.
